Ashurst Beacon - Appley Bridge

A walk to Ashurst Beacon starting from Appley Bridge.
Walkers: John R, Paddy, Mike H, Mick K, Danny & Anthony
Distance: 6.75 miles

The start of the walk from Canal Bank (cul-de-sac) on the Leeds Liverpool Canal at Appley Bridge.

A pause for a picture alongside the first set of locks on the canal.

Morning coffee at a tranquil spot

The secluded Prior's Wood Hall

Can you see Blackpool Tower, Danny?

Climbing uphill to the village of Dalton

A very aptly named house - especially today!

The monument marking the summit of Ashurst Beacon

A greenhouse in the grounds of St. Michael's C.E. Primary School at Dalton.  Note that the walls of the greenhouse are made from plastic drink bottles!

These double headstones tell a tragic story.
Jeffrey and Marian were born within 11 days of each other and died together in a tragic motor-bike accident while on holiday in France.

St. Michael's Church, Dalton

The Old Gatehouse next to the church

Approaching the summit

Butty time at the monument with its splendid views to Liverpool, north Wales and Snowdonia.

An inquisitive black boar

Stone Hall and farm

Our route took us through a field of maize, about 8 feet tall in places!

Back at Appley Bridge and the canal

Our 'shandy-man' was under doctor's orders to rest today so Anthony stepped into the breach and provided a bottle of Diet Ginger Beer. VERY low alcohol content and very welcome!

Shortly, it will become compulsory for Meanderthals to carry, not only their ID but also their insurance documents, their prescription list, a compact version of their medical file, the statement declaring if they want to be resuscitated after a heart attack, stroke etc.
Consequently, a lot of paperwork will have to be carried when a Meanderthal goes out of the front door OR when he travels!

Specifically for this purpose, a special
"Meanderthal USB Memory Stick"
has been developed.

Take a look below....

Danny's View of........Claife Heights

"I've just enough pennies to pay for my ticket."

"Granny. Who are all these funny looking men?"

Is Mike feeling seasick already?

Booting Up on the National Trust carpark

What's John doing?

Claife view point

Looking across Windermere towards Bowness

The view from Claife viewpoint

Looking towards Helvellyn

Doing it the easy way!

What a view! No, the back of John!

Coffee time. (Martin's thinking, "This lot don't know what is to come. Hee, hee!")

'Ignorance is bliss'!

Yes, but it's VERY steep!

"Lay on, MacDuff"!

(Words fail me.)

Is Danny looking through a letter box?

Coniston Old Man on the left....and a lot of Old Men behind the cameraman!

Probably the best view in the Lake District

"There were ten green bottles..........!"
