Ribchester & Hothersall

After last week's walk in 'foreign parts' (like Rossendale), a venue closer to home was chosen for this week's walk - Ribchester and the nearby Hothersall. Distance: 6.86 miles. Walkers:  Martin, Mike, Paddy, Frank, Jim D, Anthony and after a long absence, Vic.

The start of the walk from the main carpark in the centre of Ribchester.

One of the many attractive cottages in the village

A view of the River Ribble looking downstream to the west

Looking upstream..and a splendid view of Pendle Hill

The new War Memorial in the centre of the village

A moving inscription in front of the memorial.
(Presumably taken from a soldier's letter home.)

Another attractive cottage

So that's why John's not with us this week.
(The village is holding a 'Scarecrow Festival' this weekend.)

The chapel of Ss. Peter & Paul on the edge of the village

The interior of the chapel

The Almshouses next to the chapel

The Stydd chapel of St. Saviour - built in Norman times

A stone coffin in the corner of the sanctuary. This is believed to be the burial place of St. Margaret Clitherow.
