Alongside the car park are the steps down to the bridge, crossing the river Rothay |
A well constructed path led us up the valley towards the waterfall, which can be seen in the distance. Our walk was to take us up the steep fell, to the right of the waterfall. |
The rain had stopped, but intermittent strong gusts of wind deterred us from putting our hoods down. |
A good path helped our climb up the steepest part of the fell |
A series of waterfalls cascaded down from the visible summit of the crag. |
Looking back along the valley we had traversed. |
Several stops were necessary on the way up while we got our breath back. |
The steepest part of the climb over, a gentle slope made progress much faster. There's no stopping Michael now. |
Clouds are looming with another 700 ft still to climb. |
A sheep fold provides us with some shelter from the wind, while we enjoy our lunch. |
A final effort brings us to the trig point on The Calf, 2216 ft (the highest point in the Howgills. I had to use my imagination while Michael told me what I would be able to see on a good day. |
Michael shelters from the wind while he reports to Base Camp. |
A break in the clouds provides us with a momentary glimpse of the valley below. |
Michael, with Yarside in the background, (our route back down the valley). |
A couple on the opposite side of the valley, just starting their ascent of the waterfall. |
Back at the car after 4hrs. Only 6 miles but some steep climbing. 2000ft of ascent. D.K. |
