BOMBER WITH U-TURN 4+ Miles
Going the extra mile ???
CREW :- Anthony, John W, Danny, Jim.
Jim was our driver today in a brand new Volvo estate he was test driving although his present Volvo, a proud 13 year old, looks immaculate. We parked just off the A59 and set off through the short main street of Gisburn
It contained many old and handsome buildings.
It was only a few minutes before we left the A59and took to the well made farm track towards Bomber Hill and Bomber Farm.
On reaching Bomber Farm however John began to realise that his memory was no longer reliable. He was expecting an ancient church and an equally ancient hamlet. There was just a modern farm. Oh dear !
With modern housing for animals. Lots of animals.
The friendly Farmer passing by on his tractor stopped to tell us there was no old church here but if we took the footpath over the fields and through the wood we would come to Bracewell where there was a church and old buildings. Aha !
So off through the fields we went. The countryside was a delight with large fields of green, lush grass. However, this area has been described as "TELLY TUBBY" terrain. i.e. Small rounded hills which meant we were walking up and down, up and down. This was tiring in the hot sunshine. It was also lunchtime so we found a shady and comfortable SPOT. A "Comfy" bank next to the wood
As we sat munching we came to the decision to turn back towards Gisburn.
"Yes. That way back. " John seems to be saying.
"But not before I've checked that I haven't left anything." ( Which he usually does !!)
When walking the Meanderthals always follow the Golden Rule of walking groups. Stick together and walk at the pace of the slowest.
Here's Danny (Can you see him) demonstrating that very principle. 😏
So back through Wedacre Farmyard and take a different route back to the car.
It wasn't long before the steady, but gentle uphill track and the heat of the day caused us to stop, rest and finish our flasks.
I must contact a Tonsorial Artist. The droop of my moustache gives me a grumpy look. Oh 'eck. Perhaps I am 😟
Carrying on we came to our first and only stile of the day.
Another TELLY TUBBY hill to gently climb over.
To our left we passed a large solar energy farm.
In the middle of this VERY LARGE field we came to a bridge.
That's not a bridge,,,, Yes it is......No it isn't....Yes it is..... No it isn't
Our walk was nearly over, There was one rather difficult, locked gate to surmount (Literally) before we entered Gisburn and found our way through it's back streets back to the car,
Verdict.... definitely a bridge So ..... a Bridge Photo.
That's all folks
.... But not quite the end of the tale
If you care to look up a walk entitled "Soporific Serenity" Dated April 6th 2017 ( See dates and titles on the list to the right of the blog) you will discover that we have indeed done this walk before. The ancient church and hamlet in John's memory were indeed there and had we gone that extra mile we would have arrived in Bracewell and seen them. We even sat on the same comfortable bank on the edge of the wood
Walkers on that day were Paddy (RIP) Anthony, Mick K, Jim D, Vic, John W, and Harry. All of whom appear in the blogs photographs.
