MIke (no-bike) and Kath explore Fulwood

Kath and Mike were doing a stroll in the local area and then decided walk a bit further....

Walking along Garstang Road they passed The Fire Brigade Headquarters which, in its day, must have been a very impressive building.

As they continued along the A6 towards Broughton they passed the Brook Cottages, on the left opposite St. John’s Church.
The last cottage next to the brook was where Kath’s
great-grandfather, Septimus, was born. She believed they used to walk across the fields to St. Mary’s Church and School at Fernyhalgh as the family are all buried in the graveyard.

Just after passing the entrance to the Ambulance Headquarters they stopped to admire and pay their respects at the War Memorial.

As they approached the new crossroads at Broughton they noticed a small stone enclosure on the right and stopped to investigate. There was a plaque on the outside told them it was called the 'Broughton Pinfold'. Investigating further they noticed an entrance at the far side and on going inside found another plaque informing them that the Pinfold was used for gathering stray cattle belonging to the local farmers.
Leaving the Penfold and passing the bus stop and park is a very new housing development. This is on land which used to be called Park House (the house of horrors) where a murder was committed in 1981 in a revenge attack.

Crossing the road, Mike got nostalgic, remembering his Friday nights, when he would go for a pint in the now demolished
Golden Ball. Hence the pose at the bar (below)!

Passing Broughton High School they turned left and on to the Guild Wheel where they saw a Sparrowhawk, which did a fast low flight along the hedgerow to catch a small unsuspecting bird for its next meal, flying off with it in his beak. They continued on over the bridge on the west coast mainline where where stopped for coffee.

They continued along the path, which eventually led them to the Grasshoppers Rugby Club currently being used as a busy Vaccination Centre.
Crossing Lightfoot Lane they continued on home.
