STONEAGE

APOLOGIES !

Unfortunately , dear reader, Meanderthal walks will be severely curtailed for the next few weeks. Four of the Meanderthals, including the principal writers and photographers of the blog, will be in Montenegro next week, This holiday followed shortly  by a further absence, for some, in Carlisle. Sadly one of our regular walkers is "Indisposed" at present. We look forward to him being fighting fit again. So, with such a large hole in our company, it is unlikely that we shall be walking again before the middle of November. We shall no doubt visit the blog with reports of our holiday activities so keep checking. In the meantime a few lines on a recent outing by several of our members.

"THE STONEAGE IN BOWLAND FOREST"

Last night five Meanderthals went off to Browsholme Hall
To find out what  had happened in Bowland long ago
An academic gentleman would come to tell us all
The wonders of the "Stoneage"... with artifacts to show

We all squeezed into Martin's car and set off with a smile
A road with twists and turns galore it took us quite a while
The Old Tithebarn we found at last with darkness closing in
We parked the car and went inside. We're here... so let's begin

Hello and welcome . Come right in a friendly greeting said.
"The bar is open. Whiskey ? Wine ? or something else instead."
Drinks in and we found our seats and looked around the hall.
Oh dear Oh dear, Should we be here ?  It's "Barbour" wall to wall.

If not Barbour, "Burberry or even "Gucci" too
Tweed jackets, headscarves , silk cravats. "County" through and through..
The ancient hall was very grand. Stone walls and wooden beams
We sipped our drinks anticipating misty ancient themes.

But then a shock. A gentleman of portly silhouette
Came to the front to tell us,  the talk we wouldn't get.
The lecturer it seems had not turned up to give his spiel
No word he'd sent o reasons why. The lousy rotten heel

Instead our portly gentleman an academic too
Stepped in and gave a talk on Bowlands powerful few.
The "Lords of Bowland" was his theme. The owners of the land
It seems that  they came never near. Just took the money. Grand !!!
A "Bowbearer" appointed they   and he would live quite near
To keep a watch around the plot. Stop peasants "Nickin" deer
So whilst his Lordship absent was - -  on Venison did dine
The working folk in poverty could starve and pay a fine

Nothing changes it would seem Rich people own the land.
And live far off in mansions great and palaces most grand.
I wonder if they ever feel that this is not quite fair
That those who work to make such wealth should really have a share..
