Leaving the Lowry designer outlet where we had parked up, we are ready to embark on today's adventure |
On leaving the tram at Castlefield in Manchester city center, we are immediately reminded of one of our absent friends, who was unable to walk with us today |
Leaving the streets behind, we begin our exploration of the industrial heritage of this rapidly evolving city........ |
.....But not before partaking of some refreshments. The chilly wind was intent on supplying us with the fresh part of our refreshments, ensuring that we didn't tarry too long over our coffee. |
The meeting of the canals presented the Victorian engineers with a challenge which they met admirably. |
The old and the new. |
We just can't get away from him..... John I mean, not you Vic. |
Off on our merry way. |
Before long we have to cross to the other side of the canal by a rather unusual bridge, (a lock gate). |
Feeding the geese. Heart and Saul. |
Having crossed back by another bridge we make our way to the junction with the Ashton canal, which we must take to reach our destination. (The Velodrome) |
The first part of the walk along the Ashton canal takes us passed a regeneration zone with many des res apartments |
Err we leave them behind and enter a stretch of the canal that is begging for regeneration |
Finally, we arrive at the velodrome....... |
.......Where we enjoy a late lunch in comfort. |
Some of Team GB were practicing. |
Love the suits |
The building next door to the Velodrome housed the BMX course, which, due to the half term holidays, the facility was in big demand |
Some of the youngsters were fearless and kept us entertained for a while, but we couldn't linger long as we wanted to get back to Salford before rush hour. A very interesting walk. Thanks Anthony. |
