Rufford Meresands. More Photos

Not long into our walk, footpath signs led us to the very well kept back garden of this seemingly private house. After hesitating a minute or two, wondering whether to go back, we sheepishly and quietly continued. As we got near the house, a horse in a stable announced our arrival. Our bold leader went over to the house to ask directions, but being unable to attract the attention of the householder, we pressed on. Here is John W and John R emerging from the driveway. On reaching the road we spotted another footpath sign, pointing in the direction from which we had come, indicating that we were not lost after all.

Good old Harry

Passing through the village of Holmeswood.

This area of Lancashire is famous for the fertility of it's soil, it being reclaimed marsh land. Much of our walk was across these wide open spaces.

At lunchtime, the more hardy among us braved the cold and stayed on top of the bank.

The half hardy among us, well, we had to take shelter from the cold breeze wherever we cold find it.

Jim, taking a bridge shot.

The sun was going down, and we still had a way to go.....

.... But we were soon back at the car park by Mere Sands Wood Visitor Centre, enjoying Martin's shandy. Thanks Martin.
